Prayer & Fasting

August 28, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 12:30 pm PDT

As we enter a new season of ministry at Redeemer next month, we’d like to invite you to join together in a time of prayer and fasting. This five-day prayer and fasting emphasis will begin on Monday, August 28, and conclude on Friday, September 1. We’ll meet on Zoom each day @ noon for 30 minutes of prayer, to include worshiping the Lord through a Psalm, and praying for a specific area of ministry.

Register to participate and receive resources and the online prayer zoom links.

Why fasting?

Fasting is a time of intentionally separating yourself from perceived life support systems (food, media, habits) and relying on the Lord, our true life support. Fasting often results in renewed closeness with God and a greater sensitivity to spiritual things. Scripture outlines many situations in which the people of God fasted and prayed… A desire for wisdom (Acts 14:23), confession of sin (Jonah 3:5, 2 Samuel 12:16) denial of the flesh (Matt. 4:2), and asking for spiritual direction (Acts 13:1-3), to name a few.

The specific objective is to engage in fasting and prayer as we seek God’s work in the lives of people as we begin a new season of ministry in September. We want to seek His face, His wisdom, and His favor.

In their book, “Prayer and Fasting: Moving With the Spirit to Renew our Minds, Bodies, and Churches”, authors Roadcup and Eagle state eleven biblical purposes for fasting (p42-49):

  1. To fortify our prayers
  2. To repent from sin
  3. To spiritually prepare for ministry
  4. To receive power for ministry
  5. To discover the Lord’s will
  6. To mourn those lost in death
  7. To see protection from approaching danger
  8. To accompany grief in personal or corporate loss
  9. To offer worship and praise
  10. To avert God’s wrath
  11. To set aside people for ministry leadership

How will this fast work?

What: 5 Days of prayer and fasting

Why: To seek God’s face and favor together as launch our ministries this fall season

When: August 28 – September 1; Monday – Friday

Prayer: Daily prayer calls at 12pm, 30 minutes each time, in order to gather and pray. You’re also invited to join us on Tuesday at 7am. We will send out a prayer guide prior to the start of the prayer and fasting week.

How: There are varying ways to participate and we are encouraging people to engage in this fast in at least one of these ways:**

  • Liquids only (smoothies, water, and juice)
  • Fruits and vegetables only
  • Daniel fast – no meats, breads, sweets or alcohol
  • Media fast (fasting from an avenue of media entertainment that is a regular part of your life).
  • Fast 1 meal each day (e.g. no lunch) and use that time for prayer

Begin by seeking the Lord’s direction in the reasons for your fast. Make a list of the things that you will do and pray about during your fast, then return to the list daily to pray and listen to God.

Register: to receive resources and the online prayer zoom links.
